ADHD Q&A

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is a diagnosable brain disorder that makes it difficult for people to sit still, focus, and learn.

Usually, doctors diagnose ADHD in children, but symptoms often persist into adulthood.

What causes ADHD?

Researchers don’t fully understand what causes ADHD. Genetics, environment, and developmental issues likely play a role.

Risk factors for ADHD include:

  • Premature birth
  • Exposure to environmental toxins
  • Maternal drug use during pregnancy
  • Blood relative with ADHD

If you have a child exhibiting symptoms and who has these risk factors, schedule an evaluation at Integrative Wellness Center today.

What symptoms suggest ADHD?

Some of the most common symptoms of ADHD include distractibility, impulsivity, and inattention. Some, but not all, patients demonstrate hyperactivity. When hyperactivity is not present, the diagnosis is attention-deficit disorder, or ADD.

Other symptoms that are a sign of ADHD include:

  • Avoidance of tasks that require attention
  • Trouble with organization
  • Forgetfulness
  • Inability to follow instructions
  • Fidgeting or squirming
  • Interrupting people

All of these symptoms do not have to be present for an ADHD diagnosis. These symptoms continue until the ADHD patient gets treatment.

How do you diagnose ADHD?

ADHD diagnosis requires several steps. The team at Integrative Wellness Center first asks questions about the patient’s behavior. A vision test and hearing test help with diagnosis, too. They can help the providers determine whether a physical problem is causing symptoms.

The team also rules out other possible causes of ADHD-like symptoms, such as learning disabilities and anxiety.

What treatments do you provide for ADHD?

Behavioral therapy and medications help patients manage ADHD. Behavioral therapy includes individual talk therapy, family therapy, and other interventions to ease symptoms and help the patient manage impulses. The team customizes ADHD therapy to address the severity and possible causes of symptoms.

The team also provides support regarding healthy eating, limiting screen time, quality sleep, and regular physical activity also help mitigate symptoms of ADHD. These steps help you manage day-to-day symptoms, so they don't become overwhelming.
